summer daze

By Andrea in a life unexamined, catch up

It’s been so hot here. So hot that we fled to the beach, lay in the water, poked jelly fish and returned with a sunburn so bad that it nearly set the sheets on fire. For five days Jared has been making me turn my head so he can’t see me wince as he smooths aloe on the radiant shade of violet thats blossomed everywhere.

It’s been so hot here. My plants have to be watered twice a day and it’s only by force of sheer will and ardent words of love and encouragement that my lettuce has perservered and grown. My dear Tumbling Tom tomato plays possum each morning until he’s drank a pitcher of water and emerges like a dewey ingenue to stretch his leaves to strangle my dill again.

It’s been so hot here. It’s too hot to move, to do much but let heat dreams dance and your makeup run. I’m hiding from the internets in the leaves of the lettuce, the peanut butter chocolate crunch, jared’s hands, blackberry beer and the smell of basil on my porch.

It’s been so hot here. I forgot while searching to be inspired here that in the heat lay the summer, and in the summer all the inspiration I need. For now, I will be back when it rains.

  1. This is the most beautiful post about heat—or otherwise—that I’ve read in a really long time.

I, too, have hardheaded lettuce. In a good way. :) Beautiful post.

oh you poor thing. seriously, take care of that burn—they’re scary and painful. lots of aloe, my friend. and gentle hands.

…and I spend all day at work in the AC dreaming of the things I could make when I get home, only to get home and fall apart from hotness. although cucumber avocado soup doesn’t need any cooking, thank goodness.

  4. What a lovely entry.

Wonderful post! It’s been so hot here too but we’re all hoping the summer monsoons will be rolling in soon to cool the afternoons off.
